‘The Book That Was Lost And Found In Time’ Jose Saramago

We all dread receiving the rejection letter but more often than not, before the age of the internet, manuscripts would be lovingly packed up in strong brown envelopes and sent off to publishers, sometimes never to be seen or heard of again. This seems to be the fate of writers the world over. Perhaps we should take heart from the fact that a Nobel Prize winner sent a novel to a publisher in 1953 and it has just been published.

The writer in question is the Portuguese author Jose Saramago who sadly died in 2010. He is one of the greatest writers Portugal has ever produced and his books have been published in many languages. Look out for him in Author Portraits on the site shortly.

Meanwhile read what the Guardian had to say about this extraordinary Portuguese story.
